International Women’s Day is an important reminder of both how far we’ve come in ensuring that gender is no barrier to women playing an equal role in society, and how far we have to go. I chaired an event at City Hall that discussed the fight for gender equality and celebrated the too-often unrecognised contributions women make to society.

5th March: Animal Manifesto Launch with Brian May
On Monday, I was joined by Brian May, Queen guitarist and founder of the animal rights group Save Me, and Green Party animal spokesperson and London Assembly North East candidate Caroline Allen to launch the London Green Party 2012 Animal Manifesto.
The event took place at the Brown Dog Statue in Battersea Park, which was erected in 1984, and replaces a statue that was removed after the ‘Brown Dog Riots’ between pro- and anti-vivisectionists in 1910. It seems a fitting location to share our aspirations for the future of Animal welfare in London. You can see my Animal Manifesto here.

Every Wednesday, sash wearing “climate suffragettes” meet outside Westminster Tube station to greet MPs on their way into Prime Minister’s questions. On the 29th I joined our candidate for the West Central constituency Susanna Rustin at the demo. We wanted to show our support to the Climate Rush group and remind MPs of the importance of taking action to mitigate climate change.

I spoke to Conference on the progress we Greens are making in London. I told them about Green policies aiming to tackle air quality, make rented housing more secure and affordable, make our streets safer, insulate homes to cut energy bills, support small businesses and introduce our pay-as-you-drive replacement of the congestion charge. I told conference how these measures will make London cleaner, fairer , safer and more affordable. As well as celebrating our successes, I spoke of the political battles that lie ahead.

22nd February: UpRise Debate
I joined other Mayoral candidates at a debate hosted by Channel 4 and UpRise Talks. We answered questions posed by those who have the highest stake in the future of our city, young Londoners.
The ten young ambassadors who questioned the candidates were representing BSix Sixth Form College, Elevation Networks, Spirit of London Awards, 2 Fingers to Violence, FYI, HYPE, Lives Not Knives, London360, Media Trust and Reprezent FM.
